Kreative Koreans

My students have to read nonfiction books. Then they have to write a creative story integrating the topic into the story. For example, Topic: Grand Canyon… so the setting is in the Grand Canyon. Tell a creative story and use some facts about what you read in the story.

K – Topic: Benjamin Franklin

Story Summary – “Benjamin Franklin is a very naughty boy.” (Whoa good start) He often gets into trouble for buying games without his parents permission. He tries to fight the biggest guy in school and loses, so of course they become best friends. Oscar, the big guy, wants to kill everyone at school except himself and Ben. So they build a bomb. But the teacher sees it and gets rid of it (somehow). The next day, she puts sleeping medicine in their lunch and slits their throats. Also… this book is not recommended by K because it is boring and Benjamin Franklin looks boring.

o.O  ?????

M – Topic: World Atlas

Story Summary – The air goes on an adventure around the world and sees cool sights. Being the air, it goes for free and flies around the world. It also manages to switch the time on Big Ben and confuse people until the top of the tower hits it and it gets hurt. Then it breaks off the nose of the Sphinx in Egypt. It is hurt again because “those rocks are really big.” So it goes home and tells of its adventures to its friend, the air (same name, no relation), and they decide to do it all over again even though it is dangerous to travel.

J – Topic: Motorcycles (((ps this is a girl who chose to write about motorcycles.. sweet)))

Story Summary – A racer buys an expensive motorbike and wants to race another racer. So the racer sees the other racer’s bike and is nervous because one bike goes 305 km/h and the other goes 306 km/h. HUGE difference. So number 03 and number 04 race and number 04 is winning until number 03 comes through and wins.

—-I have no idea which racer was which. She refused to name them or identify their numbers—-

Passover in Short

Passover is another excuse for Jews to clean the crap out of their houses, gather, drink many bottles of red wine,  and eat copious amounts of food. We sit around the table with family, friends, and occasionally strangers to remember the hard history the Jewish people have gone through.

Our people were enslaved by Egyptians and Moses came and said some stuff and crazy stuff happened and we got away. However, in our escape we didn’t have time for our bread to bake properly so we carried the bread upon our backs and they never leavened. Hence Matzah/Matzo. Let me save you the hassle of trying this… stuff. You know saltine crackers? Take away the salt. Now imagine not having water to wash it down…but your mouth is already dry…you know that mushy feeling where it gets soft and impossible to swallow? Yeah.. that’s matzah. For 8 days (ish). Le sigh. Did I mention all of the other dietary restrictions for that week?

Anyway, some kids ask questions and we drink a lot of wine and we listen to the answers go on for a while. Then we sing in Hebrew and drink more wine. At some point we recall the 10 Plagues (extra wine if you remember them all in order!). We discuss the plate of food and all that is symbolizes. . . mostly the bitter herb…because we’re a bitter people. In case you hadn’t noticed, Jews have been getting the short end of the stick for thousands of years. (It’s worth it because we’re the Chosen People).

You think your Catholic mother can give a guilt trip? You haven’t met my grandmother. Seriously, the Jews are more stubborn than any group of people I have ever encountered. I got a tattoo of an Egyptian hieroglyph and when I showed my grandmother, her response was literally, “They Egyptians enslaved our People and you go and get a tattoo symbolizing Egypt??” ((First, Jews aren’t supposed to embellish their bodies in any way. Second, that was, like, thousands of years ago!))… I guess that’s why I’m always the ‘Wicked Child’. DAMNIT. (((((((for reference, the four children asking questions are Wise, Wicked, Simple, and the kid who doesn’t yet know how to ask questions)))))).

Anyway, wine is consumed, we recline to the left, we sing, we remember… as my family likes to put it: “We Fought, We Won, Let’s Eat!”

***Please don’t hate me for writing this, my uber-Jew friends!***

In the uber-religious seders, this is a very very long process. Literally, it doesn’t start until sundown and then it’s hours before you get to eat and then more hours of praying.

Passover Prep: From a Teacher

How to Prepare for Passover dinner for Teachers abroad:

1. Create a mind-map/brainstorm of your meal. Remember to use specific details and examples of the ingredients you plan on using with each dish.

Passover Brainstorm

2. Turn the mind-map into an efficient grocery list outline. You do not need to make complete sentences. This is to help you organize your thoughts so your essay Passover dinner isn’t messy or offtrack. Is your dish an appetizer or main course? This is the chance to decide before you begin writing cooking. If something can be or needs to be refrigerated, this is the time to acknowledge it in your ‘notes’.

3. Use the grocery list outline to gather your ingredients.

4. Keeping your mind-map and outline nearby, you can begin to assemble your dishes. It maybe easier to start with the body of the essay more time consuming meals first.

5. Proofread for any spelling or grammar errors. Check your dishes before serving for presentation.

6. Serve with a health “We fought, we won, let’s eat!”

7. מועד טובֿ
מועדים לשמחה and חַג שָׂמֵחַ (those vowels are oddly placed)

oh, bother, why bother?

My name is Shannon. I will be turning 28 in 20 days. I have been single since 2009. There were a couple of points I thought I was dating someone. They were comparable to my middle school ‘relationships’ in the maturity and lasting levels.

Yes, I think it’s bullshit. Yes I am frustrated. Yes, I think I brought a lot of it on myself. I didn’t try too hard to find someone while back in the US because I thought, “I’m leaving any day now to go live in another country or on an island.” But nearly three years went by before that move happened. Then I landed myself in a tiny ‘city’ in Thailand. There were about 10 guys in the city who weren’t Thai. Half of them were already in relationships. A fifth were gay and the others eventually found their way to a lady friend… or many in the same circle. I found solstice in the occasional tourist. Dreaming wildly that maybe one would sweep me off my feet, out of that ugly city and to another beautiful place. #sadlymistaken

Then I went back to the States for a few months and again, didn’t try too hard because I was leaving again soon. Also, I didn’t have a car too often. Also, I had no money and couldn’t go out to meet people. I was set up once or twice, and to my dismay, realized that people reallllly don’t get my “type”.

I’m picky. I know it. Why shouldn’t I be? I like my men tall. I’m 5’2″ and want the opposite of short. I prefer them taller than 6’0″ but will accept 5’10” with some build. I like firm and fit. I want to be on the arm of a hot guy who inspires me to be hot for him as well. I like intelligence. This one I have to bite my tongue for. I enjoy a good laugh. Who doesn’t? I would love a guy who wasn’t racist. I have dated men of color in the past and it hurts my heart when a guy I’m interested in (or anyone for that matter) says something disrespectful to another race or culture. Yes I understand we all have our own biases and prejudices but there’s a line to be drawn and some things should be kept private.

I’m a ‘bro.’ I get along smashingly with guys. I understand them and appreciate them. Therefore, I automatically am put into the sector of the ‘friendzone.’ We always hear about guys getting ‘friendzoned’ but what about us gals?

My luck so far tends to fall along the ‘fallen for a taken guy’ lines. Of course they’re taken. They’re good looking, hilarious, intelligent, and and and and and taken.

Am I complaining? yes. Obviously. It’s difficult to watch my friends getting paired up and engaged and married. Even the ones who you think would never go that route. I choose to travel. I choose to work. but that doesn’t mean I don’t want or won’t make time for someone else. Chemistry matters to me. There hasn’t been much in my neck of the woods.

Why is it when I venture out and find some smashingly hot guy, it’s a hit it and quit it thing? I get it. I do it. If it wasn’t that great…I quit it. Leave them in their hotel or apartment. If they’re good, I stay a bit and try to maintain contact. But then I’m the one making the contact and not finding the return. Sound familiar? It’s because I’m too easy. No I don’t sleep with everyone and hook up all the time. I’m not a slut. My personality is easy. I am not aggressive but I try to be clear about my intentions. They like the tease, they don’t like the tease.

And they say women are difficult to understand.

Tick off the 5K

One of the resolutions (the 1. of the 2.0.1.4) has been achieved.

I have run a 5K. I chose the Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Marathon as my venue for this resolution. Who wouldn’t want to frolic through falling cherry blossoms overlooking a lake!?

I have ‘trained’ by running on a treadmill for a few months. It wasn’t until a couple of friends mentioned (back in March) that I should probably train outside since the elements were different than inside. DAMNIT. They were so right. While I went from not being able to run .25 mile on a treadmill, I had built it up to 1.5miles straight! Everyone says ‘it’s easier to run outside!’ BULLSHIT. BULL f*%^ing SHIT. I could barely run a kilometer. Which is about .6 miles. The air was hurting my lungs, the people were in my way, the ground was uneven. And I couldn’t just press buttons to help me get to a certain steady speed. It was terrible.

But, I had to do it in order to continue training.

Week of the marathon comes and I am a nervous wreck. My running is terrible, my breathing is weak, and it’s cold outside. Plus I realized that I was going to be running at 8 am.. which meant waking up at 6am. Which I don’t do. Ever. IMG_3111

Marathon day. I’m staying with an awesome chick (sister of a coworker) who is also running the 5K. IMG_3120

Luckily it was a nice big group of us running together.

IMG_3121And everyone was so nice and encouraging.

I had my 100,000Won shorts on over my running pants… which prompted a friend to tell me I have never looked more Jewish! IMG_3119 IMG_3114

It probably didn’t help I was wearing a scarf over my head like a shmata!

Which of course fell off in the first minute of running.

So the Full marathoners started, followed by the halvers, then the 10Kers, and at last, all the gajillions of us running the 5K.    I’m pretty sure I was dancing crazy-like for my warmup. and… while i was running… which is hard to do.

The start of the race was signaled with colored powder and fire crackers. IMG_3122 The Start.

IMG_3127 IMG_3126                                                                            The gals starting the race!

The start was strong. As always. I hit the 1km mark before I knew it! The flowered trees were so beautiful.. that these freaking people would stop in the middle of the race to take selfies and pictures with the trees. GUYS MOVE! Ridiculous.

I had to walk a bit here and there. Sometimes it was because people were blocking the way, others because I couldn’t breathe. At one point I walked with a new friend when she was suffering from sore feet. Another point I stopped when I caught up with another new friend who was waiting for others in the group.

IMG_3129 She wanted a picture.. and here it is!! WITH the cherry blossoms in the background.

Unfortunately, every time i tried to take a picture, my Nike+Runners would pause without indication. I would start running and a few moments later hear “you are resuming your workout”. WHAT!? #damnitnike

IMG_3135Anyway, I finished the 5K somewhere between 32:14-37:00ish  It depends on the Nike+ timer. Plus, there was an extra .5km added at the end which is stupid.

After, we all went to the free beer and makgeoli tents and had our fill. IMG_3143

IMG_3137 My medal!     IMG_3141  Soju mascot. He was happy.
