Accountability.

I admit. I’ve been rubbish at keeping my resolutions. I can blame whatever funks or bad energies  I want — but the reality is that I am accountable for myself.

I have tried multiple workout routines and tried to take advantage of the various deals that various workout facilities offer. $41 for 41 days of Power Yoga. $39 for 30 days of Barre classes. Initial Fees waived and multi-location available for a discounted price. I even made up my own where I pay more off my credit card for each pound I gained instead of lost!  It didn’t work. It wasn’t consistent. It didn’t work and wasn’t consistent because I didn’t work to keep it consistent.

I need to be held accountable. I just completed a 3 week challenge of $21 for 21 days. Except I paid extra for a diet plan that I could have found online. The difference this time is that the location and times of the bootcamp classes are convenient. I can stop by before work twice a week for a 30 min class or do 1 or 2 30 min classes right after work. They’re definitely tough classes, but the coaches and other attendees are really great. There’s such a nice little community within it and it’s encouraging me to stay. I won’t be able to afford it after this 6 week challenge ends at the end of the year.. but I’ll work my ass off until then.

On to the good stuff: How will I hold myself accountable?

  1. I attend these damn classes! There’s a weekly weigh in and a before and after measurement to see how much weight, inches, and body fat % is lost (or gained).
    • I weighed in at 159.3lb yesterday (Monday 11/26)
  2. I’m eating healthier and being honest about what I am consuming. How am I going to be honest? I’m going to write about it here. This will be my little diary. I can update it as the day goes by.
  3. My BFF Melanie — we’re both not happy with where we are in our bodies and we want to be better and stronger. We basically talk everyday anyway, but on Mondays we will weigh in and chat about our diets and workouts. It helps to have a partner to hold yourself accountable.

So there it is. Let’s get it done!

2018 Resolutions Mid-year Update

6 months in and half a dozen left in 2018. And I am doing a SHIT job with this.

Resolution 1: Follow through.
Whether it’s a text message, a blog entry, an application, whatever! I will follow through with it.

—UPDATE: You’ll notice my last blog post was the resolutions post. FAILED. And  I have had SO many drafted messages (text and email). So SUPER FAILED.

Resolution 2: Weight Loss
Yup. Back on the list. I have been through a lot with this one. One year I gained a lot and then next I lost it. Last year, I gained a lot again. Whether it was stress, diet, hormonal, or lack of exercise — it will not be repeated. I admit I am more than 160lbs. That’s bad. My final goal is to be between 120-130. If I get down to 140, I’ll be pleased. If I plateau at 135, I’ll be still quite happy.
How will I change this? I’ve already started watching what I’m eating. I’m cooking for myself again and tracking how much I’m eating and when.
I’m going to also give myself 30 day food challenges. 30 Days with no pizza. The next 30 with no Mexican food, etc. Let’s see how long that lasts. Taco Tuesday will rue the day.

—UPDATE: Not great. I’m down only about 5 lbs? I’m steady at 157lb. I’ve had a lot of stomach stuff going on this year though and I’m not sure how much to attribute to that. I’m getting a hernia repair surgery again tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens from that.
That 30 day food challenge thing? Meh. I made it halfway through the Whole30 Diet. I did make it 30 days without pizza.
Regardless of excuses — FAIL

Resolution 2.5: Exercise
To follow up the weight loss through diet, I am also challenging myself to be more active again. In Korea, I had hills and stairs to climb every day. I didn’t drive as often, so I wasn’t as lazy. Being back in Orlando, I don’t have the natural inclines or the beautiful hiking options. But I do have lakes and water, along with a new paddleboard. I want to get a few hours of paddling in a week if I can (weather permitting). I’m also going to take advantage of ‘New Student’ specials offered by gyms and fitness studios. The first will be 40 days $40 Power Yoga. The next will be 30 day Barre classes. Having these near to my work will allow me to keep to a schedule while avoiding traffic. Let’s see how it goes.

—UPDATE: Semi-fail. While I’m not working out regularly, I did do the 40 day Power Yoga and most of barre classes. I haven’t done much more than that though. I’ll jump into a hot yoga class when I can or go paddle board or bike ride once a week.

Resolution 3: Make that money!
My new job is wonderful. But no lie, it does NOT pay very well. True, I get paid better than others in my position at the company, but it’s just not that much!! So I need to get back my passion projects. Voice acting and massage therapy. Today I reapplied for my Florida massage license. As soon as I’m done with this cold, I hope to start my voice over demos again and start auditioning. I need additional income one way or another.

—UPDATE: FAIL!! I have not done a single massage since I got my license renewed. I auditioned for a few voiceovers but to no avail. It’s all I talk about is getting back into this or that and making a little extra money. This hernia repair will delay the massage part another month or two. Maybe I can Uber again?

Resolution 4: Stick with the Blogging!!
That was my resolution last year and I SUCKED at it. In fact, I went the ENTIRE year without a single blog post. Luckily, I’ve started a new blog that is not connected with this one. If you are interested in checking it out, I ask that you contact me privately. It’s not meant for everyone. Not yet at least.
I hope that I have some new experiences I can share via WittyLMT as well.

—UPDATE: obvious fail. But better than last year, I didn’t go a whole year.. only half of one. And that other blog I tried to create, I’ll put some of the posts up here because I have too many blogs going on.

Resolution 5: Visit 2 new places this year!
In the past, I have said that I will visit 2 new countries. That maybe more difficult now that I’m state-side and not making the money I did before, and living in a higher-cost-of-living location. This year, I’d like to visit 2 places in the US that I’ve never been. Considering that I’ve barely been around the US, this should be easy. Let’s rack up some mileage points, hey?

—UPDATE: FAIL. My BFF and I are planning on a trip to Arizona (and Canada, and Seattle, and Tennessee, and Utah, and…). But without having anything actually planned.. it may also be a future fail.

Halfway 2018 Update Overall: FAIL!! I am a loser. I am not doing well with this. My resolutions are not unrealistic, but I lack motivation, money, and friends. I’m working on it, but obviously not hard enough. Maybe this blog post will help whip me into shape. Literally and figuratively.

Weight a minute…

I came to Korea 2 years ago. I weighed about 140-145lbs (66-68kg). Prior to that I lived in Thailand and weighed about 135-140lbs (61-63kg)..

In Thailand I had Asian markets and cheap food in small portions. I cooked my own food or ate out but I definitely did my share of eating.. But I was also riding my bicycle around town in the sticky humid heat of Surat Thani. I had a dress and skirt custom made during my last week in that country.

I went back to the U.S. in mid April 2013. During my summer months at home I didn’t do much.. I had Publix around the corner and a large kitchen with ample counter space. I was no longer eating small portions, special spices, or riding my bike everywhere. I hadn’t realized I had gained weight until my friend’s wedding in August when I tried to put on my custom made dress and it was.. Snug to say the least.

I figured I was going back to Asia and would lose weight. My friend Ben tried to warn me that many people gained weight in Korea. I laughed and ignored him.

I moved to Korea in August 2013 weighing about 145lbs / 66 kg.. Ish?

I was gaining weight. I knew this because my pants were getting tighter and tighter.

About a year after living in Ulsan (July 2014) I went to a surgeon about my hernia and he said I’d need to lose weight after the surgery. I weighed in at 72kg..which I quickly converted – and to my shock and dismay – to 158lbs. I had gained more than 10lbs in that year alone.

(Quick backstory: I graduated high school at 120-125lbs. Over the course of 8 years I had barely gained 10lbs) so you can imagine the horror I felt.

I had been working out. I hadn’t been eating a lot of rice. Where did this come from??

I stopped taking pictures of myself and untagging them from Facebook because they were gross. I was gross.

A friend told me to get off birth control and see what happened. I happened to be running out of my prescription anyway so I decided to try it.

In December of 2014, I moved to Seoul. I joined a gym immediately and did my best to go a few times a week at least. I teetered between 71kg-73kg (156-160lbs). I lived in a super tiny apartment with a 2 min walk to work. This only made matters worse. I hate winter and stayed inside my tiny apartment too much..which meant I was eating a lot. I was stressed and unhappy…which meant I was eating a lot.

In April 2015 I went to another surgeon about a ganglion cyst in my wrist. I weighed in at 75kg. I didn’t believe the scale. I was afraid to convert it. I couldn’t even admit the number out loud. I literally would choke. So here goes: 165lbs.

In my highest weight, I was at my lowest point. What. The. Fuck. Was. Happening????

I went to an OBgyn about birth control because obviously that shit wasn’t working and my worst nightmare is becoming pregnant. I wanted an IUD.

(I was supposed to get para guard back in 2011 but chickened out when I saw the tools).

In May 2015 I received Mirena. I was also losing my job and therefore that tiny apartment.

In June 2015 I was having stomach issues. I thought the intense pain was caused by gallbladder problems. Turns out I was extremely backed up. So backed up that the doctor wondered how I was still functioning. Oh.. And I had a mild form of colitis. I took the medications prescribed.

I moved into my new larger apartment on June 22nd 2015. It was on a hill (well, still is).

I had a new schedule that required me to take a subway to work and walk to and from subways. (I’m switching to present tense because it applies to now). I work all over Seoul. I live in HBC, work in Mokdong, and tutor in Gangnam. It’s all over the place.

Somehow though the weight started to dissipate. I went to a gym and was 69kg, which I quickly converted to 152lbs. What???????

Then my student had a scale and we weighed ourselves. I was 67.6kg.. Which I quickly converted to 149lbs. I was below 150!!!!! Holy shit.

I bought my own scale and today I weighed in at 65kg. It was my 1st goal weight. I grabbed clothes that I haven’t been able to fit into since I moved to Korea. And here is the before and after…

February 2015

September 2015

The next goal is 61.5kg (135kg). Let’s see what happens by 2016 😉

2.0.1.4. – Resolutions

I’m not a resolutions type. Never have been. But the last few years haven’t been the best, so I’m pulling a Man in the Mirror. I’m gonna make a change for once in my life!

As previously mentioned, I like the numbers 2 and 4. Since they’re both mentioned in the year, I’m going to center my resolutions are the numbers.

2 – The minimum amount of new countries I will visit (Taiwan and Japan)

0 – My goal for a credit card statement.

1 –  attempt a 5K

4 – days a week of working out… (unless I can make it more.)

20 – have sex at least this much (it was a bad couple of years)

14 – lbs to be lost by 2015

201 – times I talk to my family

2-14 – Run two miles in 14 minutes ((I’m a really bad runner))

2014 – smiles (hypothetically)

So it seems health and fitness is what I will focus on this year. Look good, feel good.

Couch to 5K

My friends run. I don’t. I dance. Ask me to run and I can do a quick dash but I cannot go for longer than a minute. maybe. But my friends run. And some family members started to run. And the skinny people all run. After seeing a noticeable transformation in all of these people, I decided to take on the challenge. My friend mentioned an app called ‘Couch to 5K.’ It’s a 5K trainer that trains for 30min/day x3/week. The first few weeks are okay. Running for a minute, walking for 2 repeat. . . Then week 4 started… Jog for 3 min, walk 90sec, Jog for 5 min?????, walk for 2.5min repeat. Talk about lowering self esteem when ya can’t run for 5 minutes. But then I started week 5. Yesterday I started week 5. . .

“Brisk 5 min walk (warmup), jog for 3/4mile (or 8min), walk for 1/2mile (or 5 min), jog for 3/4 mile (or 8 min), walk for 5 min cooldown”

BLAH!? 8 min?? Here’s the sad part. I converted the 3/4mile to the km that my treadmill insists on. 3/4mile = 1.2km. I started running at .48km and after 8 min I was barely at 1.2km. . . I was supposed to be at 1.7km! I have noticed the timer on my phone goes faster than the timer on the treadmill. I could start my 30min app 3 minutes after the treadmill timer starts and still be finished 10 seconds before the 30 minutes is up on the treadmill. This makes me wonder if I’m getting accurate information. Today, I am supposed to be doing Week 5: Day 2. . . which suddenly asks me to jog for 20 BLOODY MINUTES!!!! What a dick. This app is a jerk. Will I do it? ((long thoughtful pause))… I guess so. I will try. I will probably not make it the full 20 minutes since I couldn’t run the full 8 minutes yesterday, but I will try!! And my friend is with me and that should hopefully be good motivation. Today will be different. I will download the Nike +Running App and see my true results.
